Why We Don’t Let the Kids Chew Much Gum

Remember when we were young and gum had sugar in it? I mean real sugar? Yeah they said it was bad for teeth, but in moderation really was not that bad.  Well I miss those days of gum having real sugar! We will not let our kids chew gum often now and not because of it “being bad for teeth.”  There are bigger concerns here for us.

All the major gum makers are putting Aspartame in their gum.  Read the labels and you will see it in there.  Some have other sweeteners too and we are completely against any of these sweeteners.  Why can’t they just go back to having sugar?

Artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame has been thought to cause (and I believe linked to) various illnesses including cancer.  I remember when I was pregnant with my oldest, I was told to avoid anything that contained Aspartame or Saccarin as they were not definite that it was safe to the fetus.  I also get sick when I have sweeteners – light headed and also stomach discomfort.

I don’t believe that this stuff should be put in gum for kids to chew personally.  I only let them chew gum on occasion but I worry if I made the right choice every time I do! I also notice that some sweeteners are going by different names too – I cannot remember the chemical names but have seen odd names that when Googled come up as a sweetener.  And if it is sugar free, you can guarantee that there is a sweetener in it.

Do you let your kids chew gum or do the sweeteners worry you too?

My kids aren't allowed to chew gum, but it is because I don't want to have to get it out of hair, clothes, furniture, and carpet. Or they swallow it. I chew it daily, though.
I never thought about gum having artificial sweeteners. I don't feed the kids anything with artificial sweeteners in it. Here I thought I was doing something good for my teeth, which I think gum chewing can be, but perhaps doing damage in other ways.

There is mixed reports about the sweeteners, but they are in gum and that concerns me.

Speaking of gum in hair, my mom had to cut gum out of my hair when I was a kid. I fell asleep with it in my mouth and woke up to it in my hair – not easy to get out of the hair!

No gum here. Right now choking on it or swallowing it is my big concern with the kids. But I'm not much of a gum chewer myself, and the concerns you brought up are going to make me think more about it as they get older and want to chew gum.

I just am not comfortable with these artificial sweeteners myself. I am not sure why they switched over to these sweeteners! I have seen gum that has sugar in it but yet has the sweeteners in it too.

Maybe it is me worrying lol, but I don't really like the idea of these sweeteners. I have heard too many things about them to be comfortable with them – tho some of what I have read may not be proven, it is enough for me to not like them 🙂

I'm thankful that I was never a big gum chewer because I can't have it at all now because of this change. 🙁 All fake sweeteners make me nauseous/sick within a few minutes. Even with tiny amounts in gum….I'll be dry heaving away the remnants for far too long.

Too much information? Probably. But I think it's important to take note that some of us are rather sensitive to it and may not even realize it. It took me a while to figure out that it was those sweeteners doing it to me (a diet drink here, a stick of gum there, a flavored water over here….). Now that I know, I can avoid it, but there's no telling how many people are clueless that their stomach aches and headaches are due to things in their food (and gum) that they don't even realize. 🙁

I am not sure why they allow it either. The use of these sweeteners bother me too! I have seen them listed in gum that has sugar in it and I can't figure out why it would be there when there is sugar in it too.

I haven't had a problem with chewing gum that has small amounts, but I get sick from diet sodas and higher amounts. I stay clear of sugar free gum and then noticed that there are gums that have both sugar and sweeteners.

For some reason they are putting these sweeteners in more things now then they ever have. What gets me tho is that if there is sugar in something, they have to list it in the nutrition facts. But yet they don't even put anything on the label about artificial sweeteners except in the ingredients that many people do not read. I have also seen them listed by a chemical name and I didn't know that was what it was until I got sick. I had to look up a couple of the ingredients and found one was a sweetener.
